Charles from Oaken Holt welcomes The Flying Scotsman to Oxford

Charles, resident at Oaken Holt care home in Farmoor was delighted to indulge one of his lifelong passions when he went to Oxford Parkway on Tuesday 6th June to welcome The Flying Scotsman, one of the nation’s favourite steam trains.

Recently refurbished, The Flying Scotsman was scheduled to come through Oxford and as Charles is such a train enthusiast, we could not let the chance go by without him being able to see the locomotive up close.

Arranged with the assistance of our driver Pat who escorted him on the trip, Charles set off full of high spirits and very excited at the prospect of fulfilling his wish.

Train enthusiasts such as Charles as well as interested observers from all across Oxfordshire lined up on the platform to catch a glimpse of the Flying Scotsman as it pulled in.

The famous train, built in 1923, left London on its trip and stopped at Oxford Parkway to soak up the adulation of those on the platform. This was one of the only four stops on its journey so they felt very privileged to be able to experience this event.

Charles and Pat got there early to ensure a good vantage point and they were very lucky as they managed to get up close so they had an excellent view from the front of the platform as the “Flying Scotsman” stopped for a short time. Pat was able to take photos capturing the moment and a very happy smiling Charles.

Charles was absolutely delighted by the whole event and regaled us all on his return with his adventure. Charles tends not to choose to go on trips preferring to stay at our home, so this was a real occasion for him and one that we know will bring back many treasured memories, as well as for Pat who shared this special day with him.
