Mellish Residents Step Into Autumn With Coffee, Cakes And Crafts
When a local coffee shop invited residents from Mellish House to create an autumnal art display, the Wellbeing team was delighted to organise a special visit.
Connecting with the Local Community
Getting out into the local community is important for residents at Mellish House and they love a short trip with a treat at the end, like a posh coffee and an indulgent cake. Charlotte Francis, the manager of Starbucks in Sudbury, contacted the Mellish team, explaining that she would like to connect more closely with neighbours in the local area and was keen to include the home’s residents. Her idea was to host a fun activity to celebrate autumn where residents would create a colourful banner, bringing a lovely personal touch to the store’s seasonal decorations.
With the coffee shop a short distance from Mellish House, it was an ideal location for a pitstop and on this occasion, it was also a creative hub!
Creativity Fuelled By Warm Drinks and Sweet Treats
On a bright Tuesday morning, 10 residents - Hazel, Maureen, Gilly, Vic, Mick, Jim, Terry, Pam, Edith and Marion – were driven off in the minibus, accompanied three Wellbeing team members and three carers. When the group arrived at Starbucks they found tables set up for their ‘Coffee, Cakes and Crafts’ session and in no time at all, the creativity began! With autumnal templates shaped like acorns, foxes, leaves and pumpkins, and a range of coloured pens, the residents enjoyed filling the shapes and choosing colour combinations – fuelled by delicious drinks and cakes.
Residents’ Bunting Brings a Personal Touch to the Coffee Shop
Once complete, their artwork was attached to a string and hung up in pride of place at the front of the counter, making a cheerful display and really bringing the new season to life. Charlotte was delighted and said, “I really love the bunting everyone made! We've had a few customers question the bunting and say how nice it is, which is lovely to see that people are noticing it”. The residents enjoyed their morning too. Mick commented, “I really enjoyed the cakes they had, they were lovely", and Tracy, who accompanied her mum Maureen, remarked, “Mum said she had a great time, getting out in the fresh air really helps her daily routine."
With Charlotte intending to host more fun events “as it brings happiness to everyone involved” Mellish House residents are looking forward to the prospect of unleashing their creative skills – and enjoying Charlotte’s wonderful hospitality – over the months to come.
