Laverstock Care Centre Hosts Pink Afternoon Tea For Breast Cancer Now

The team and residents at Laverstock Care Centre embraced all things pink at an event held to raise funds for Breast Cancer Now.

A Sociable Get Together with a Purpose

Residents’ families and friends joined guests from the community - including local professionals and care coordinators, and members of the Durrington WI – for a Pink Afternoon Tea. The team had been keen to support Breast Cancer Now - the United Kingdom's largest breast cancer charity - and the event gave everyone the opportunity to enjoy a sociable get together with a purpose.

The pink theme generated an extra element of fun on a sunny afternoon at Laverstock Care Centre. Pretty balloons were strung up and there was a sea of pink as far as the eye could see with residents, team members and visitors sporting a variety of pink outfits and accessories.

Unique Pink Ribbon Brooches Show Carer Kezie’s Commitment

Kezie, one of the home’s Senior Carers, created ‘special edition’ pink ribbon brooches which were snapped up in return for a donation to the charity. Explaining why she wanted to do something special for the event, Kezie said, “Two of our colleagues have been affected by breast cancer, so I wanted to show my support. Making the pink ribbon brooches was one way I could help, because every one sold meant more money donated to Breast Cancer Now, and helping people who may need support.”

A Fun Day and Support for a Good Cause

The home’s Chef Dean and his team created a range of delicious pink cakes and sweet treats for the event which were served by Jade from the hospitality team, who had helped to decorate the home earlier. Throughout the afternoon, Jade was busy offering a choice of homemade cakes and refreshments, and donations were flowing as fast as the pink lemonade!

Looking back on the day, Jade said, “It was genuinely my favourite day I’ve worked here. It was such good fun and there was a real sense of community. Everyone really embraced it – they loved all the pink decorations, the cakes and treats, but most importantly they understood why we were doing it and were so supportive of the cause. Seeing residents, families, colleagues and people from the local community all getting involved together was lovely.”

Salisbury Voices for Life Choir Make Their Debut

A highlight of the afternoon was the first performance by the recently formed Salisbury Voices for Life Choir. The choir supports anyone affected by cancer, including themselves and others, and various charities. They arrived dressed in pink for the occasion and performed a selection of songs for residents and guests, which inspired lots of singing and dancing from the audience.

Meanwhile, the fun – and fundraising – continued. Chef Dean had made a large cake for a ‘guess the weight of the cake’ competition and two pink hampers were raffled off, one being won by a surprised Choir Leader, Phil, who laughed, “It’s very rare that I win anything so I am chuffed”!

Fabulous Afternoon in a Community Hub

Laverstock Home Manager, Erin, was pleased that, alongside raising much needed funds, the event had brought everyone together: “It was absolutely wonderful to see so many members of our community supporting our residents and families and Breast Cancer Now, and to raise such a great sum of money while having a fabulous afternoon together. The home felt like a real community hub on the day, which was brilliant. Breast Cancer Now is incredibly close to our hearts here at Laverstock Care Centre, so we’re delighted to have raised £315.”

Residents, families and guests were equally enthusiastic about how much they enjoyed the afternoon and Salisbury Voices for Life Choir are delighted to have been invited back to perform for residents and families at Christmas – another opportunity to bring the community together at Laverstock Care Centre.
