Donkeys Make Everyone’s Day As Benson House Residents Visit A Local Sanctuary

1st October 2026

Residents at Benson House regularly enjoy visits from therapy animals, but a trip out to meet some rather larger four-legged friends was quite an event.

Resident Monica and Daughter Sue Champion Island Farm

Visiting a local donkey sanctuary was the idea of Benson House resident Monica and her daughter, Sue. As committed animal lovers, they had heard about the Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary, a registered charity based on the outskirts of Brightwell-cum-Stotwell, near Wallingford. Island Farm cares for ill-treated and neglected donkeys and although they don’t actively rescue other animals, new arrivals in recent years have included a sheep, some goats, chickens, geese and ducks.

Alongside donating to support the brilliant work of the Island Farm team, it is also possible to adopt a donkey, which is what Monica and Sue had chosen to do. ‘Dizzy’ became their adoptee and during the recent heatwave, Sue took her responsibilities seriously, donating an incredible 40kg of carrots, 25kg of apples and a box of ginger nuts to help all the donkeys through the drought.

Residents Delight in Donkeys and Farmyard Scenes

September’s cooler days were perfect for a visit to the farm. A special trip was arranged by the home’s Wellbeing Coordinator, Lauren, with residents Derek, Dee, Ron, Grace, Peter and Dianne keen to join Monica and Sue. On arrival at the farm, everyone felt invigorated by the fresh air and the distinctive ‘farmyardy’ aroma! The group loved seeing a parade of donkeys pass by as they headed out through the yard - all different colours, sizes and ages. Everyone was keen to get a closer look and once settled in the fields, the donkeys were happy to approach for a nuzzle or a stroke.

Wonderful Memories Made on a Special Day

The visit was especially meaningful for Monica, who finally had the chance to meet Dizzy in person, and she was thrilled to be able to spend time with her adopted friend. All the residents had a wonderful time at the farm, but the visit was extra-special for Monica and Sue. Their love of animals and commitment to a cause that means a great deal to them both, really shone through.

Back at Benson House, Ron cheekily suggested that he could ride the donkey at the Gold Cup, while Monica revealed that she’d wanted to bring Dizzy home with her. Although the gardens at Benson House are spacious, there isn’t quite enough space for stables – although who knows, well behaved residents of Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary might just stop by for a quick visit!
