The Orchard Celebrates Volunteering Day With An Event For The U3A
To celebrate Volunteering Day, the team and residents at The Orchard hosted a special afternoon for members of their local U3A group.
Building a Strong Relationship with St Albans U3A
The event was planned to recognise and thank the St Albans U3A (University of the Third Age) for the incredible contribution they make within the local St Albans community – including a wide range of volunteering activities - and to celebrate the relationship that has been built with The Orchard Nursing Home.
Earlier this year, Simon Browne, Chairman of the St Albans U3A, had invited The Orchard’s Customer Relations Manager, Natalie, to speak to members at their regular meeting. Natalie introduced The Orchard and described the many free community events, informative workshops, support groups and social activities that the care home hosts throughout the year – all designed to provide opportunities for people within the community to come together. Natalie explained that The Orchard creates a welcoming space that is accessible to all, especially those who may feel lonely or isolated - an environment where people can make friendships, learn something new, and feel part of a caring community.
Saying Thank You with Sunshine and Bubbles
Inviting the U3A group to The Orchard was a way of acknowledging the incredible voluntary work they carry out within the local community – and a thank you to their members who have visited The Orchard to engage and entertain residents with a variety of activities, including a wonderful performance by their talented guitar and ukelele group, and regular Rummy Club and Scrabble Club sessions.
On a beautiful afternoon, the bubbles flowed as residents, team members and their guests relaxed, chatted and enjoyed the summer sunshine in the home’s stunning garden. The U3A members shared stories about the wide range of volunteering they undertake, from entertaining care homes and community groups with live music, to organising litter-picking initiatives, supporting older people, running interest groups, and helping to bring people together through shared hobbies and activities.
Benefits of Staying Connected with the Local Community
Resident Erica particularly enjoyed meeting the group as she was once an active member of the U3A herself. She reminisced about her time with the organisation and told the members about the creative groups she attended, especially arts and crafts, poetry and other artistic activities. It was lovely to see Erica reconnect with something that has given her so much pleasure – and a reminder of how important it is to help residents stay in touch with the local community.
Events like this demonstrate the importance of bringing people of all ages together. Volunteering has an incredible impact—not only on those receiving support, but also on those giving their time, skills and kindness. Natalie was delighted to have had the opportunity to host the afternoon and said,

With discussions around future creative activities for residents which might include arts and crafts, painting, poetry and music, the celebration was the perfect opportunity for The Orchard and St Albans U3A to share experiences, strengthen community connections and celebrate the positive impact that volunteering has on so many people's lives.
