Brooklyn House Goes Cowboy For International Country Music Day
When International Country Music Day popped up on their calendar, the Activities team at Brooklyn House knew they’d found the perfect theme for their music-loving residents.
Cowboy and Country in Brooklyn’s Wild West
The opportunity to dress up is always greeted with enthusiasm at Brooklyn House Nursing Home and both residents and team members were happy to get into the spirit of the day, celebrating all things ‘cowboy and country’.
Creating the right look was all part of the fun and the care staff took the initiative, buying lots of different hats and neck scarves to add to a wonderful selection of props. The team and residents put on a range of Stetson-style hats, and the horseshoe shaped masks were also very popular.
The team had set up a wacky Wild West backdrop complete with a horse from the stable, which Wellbeing Coordinator Skye had great fun posing on. Resident Dorothy joined her for a picture, looking like the perfect saloon regular in her hat and scarf!
Cowboy Casserole Perfect Preparation for Line Dancing
The scene was set for the day and it was soon time for lunch, where a cow table centrepiece added an extra element of fun. Brooklyn’s chef was up for the challenge, creating a delicious country-style menu featuring an authentic Cowboy Casserole (named by resident Cyril), made with hearty sausages and different types of beans. It wasn’t served on tin plates around a campfire but everyone said it was delicious and it was the perfect preparation for the afternoon’s activity – line dancing!
Team members, residents and family members joined in and the music paid tribute to iconic country singers like Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. For those not quite coordinated enough to master the dancing, there was a lovely singalong too. “We had a wonderful afternoon”, said residents Linda and Daphne. “Everyone was having fun and smiling”.
‘Shout Yeehaw’ – the New Armchair Exercise
Luckily, the country theme didn’t end there and the residents’ regular armchair exercise session was cowboy themed, and included Lassoing, Point the Gun, Ride the Horse and ‘Shout Yeehaw’. The day was a wonderful celebration of music and entertainment and whether singer, dancer, hat wearer or horse rider, everyone came together to enjoy some good old, foot tapping, country tunes.
