Whittington House Turns Pink In Support Of Breast Cancer Now Charity
Earlier this month, residents and team members wore every shade of pink for a day – all part of their fundraising campaign on behalf of Breast Cancer Now.
Support for Important Work
The team at Whittington House regularly fundraises for charities they are keen to support and the enthusiasm always extends to the home’s residents, families and friends. Their planned event was the first held at the home on behalf of Breast Cancer Now - a charity that helps many women in the UK.
Breast Cancer Now is the United Kingdom's largest breast cancer charity. They combine research, patient support, and public campaigns with the goal that by the year 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live and live well.
Raising Money and Having Fun
The chance to host an event, have fun, and raise money for a good cause was embraced by all at Whittington House and there were different elements planned, including team members being invited to dress in pink, with prizes on offer for the most imaginative outfits.
When the day of the event arrived, a welcome cool breeze made the home’s ‘Woodland’ garden area the perfect spot for a gathering of residents, families, friends and guests from the local community. Pink cupcakes made specially by the home’s chefs were served in style as part of a delicious afternoon tea, and singer, Amanda Jane Vintage, entertained an appreciative audience with a range of popular songs from different eras. ‘Country Road’ was a particular favourite with residents.
Competition, Cupcakes and Great Music – all for a Good Cause
Afterwards, the elected residents’ judging panel - Janet Hall, June Dorrington and John Townsend - took their duties very seriously, despite being seated at a jaunty pink table, complete with balloon decorations! After much deliberation, they declared that the winner of the ‘Most Imaginative Pink Outfit’ competition was Yvonne – one of the home’s carers who dressed in cowboy-themed pink. Yvonne’s prize was a very smart suitcase, which was perfect as she is off to the Cotswolds for a holiday soon, and has planned a bigger trip to Morocco in January. Resident Janet said she’d had such good fun being one of the judges and thought it was lovely to see all the staff dressing up in pink and enjoying the day with the residents.
It was a happy, sociable day and as a result of kind donations through their Just Giving page and a donation box in the home, Whittington House raised £145 for Breast Cancer Now. The team are keen to continue supporting the charity so the pink hats, accessories and decorations have been carefully stashed away, ready for another event next year!
