Celebrating Creativity At Parris Lawn On National Day Of Arts In Care Homes
When the team at Parris Lawn heard there was a special day for focusing on arts in care homes, they decided it was the perfect opportunity to showcase their own residents’ talents.
Parris Lawn’s Got Talent!
It turned out that residents – and team members – at Parris Lawn Care Home had a wide variety of skills to offer, some as a result of long-term hobbies or jobs, including one resident who had a career on Savill Row and another who worked in print production. Others have found new inspiration at the Wellbeing team’s regular arts and crafts sessions, and resident Joan W has even taught some of the staff to knit!
With so much shared enthusiasm, there was no better way to celebrate creativity than with a special Art Exhibition, marking the National Day of Arts in Care Homes.
In the weeks leading up to the exhibition, residents attended their arts and crafts workshops with real purpose and a flurry of activity resulted in handmade cards, flower pressings, autumn wreaths, bookmarks, drawings and photography. The show also gave Parris Lawn the chance to share creative projects residents had been working on independently, as well as pieces they had created in the past which were brought in as part of the display.
Residents Reveal Artistic Skills and Newfound Flair
When the big day arrived, Angela, Head of Wellbeing, Vivien, Wellbeing Coordinator and Karen, Head Receptionist, took over one of the communal lounges and set up a wonderfully varied display. Sharon, the home’s Hospitality Manager, also arranged to borrow some fabulous Elizabethan-style costumes and accessories from the local Bonfire Society which added an authentic touch to the beautifully arranged pieces.
The exhibition was open between 11.00am and 4.00pm, and residents were each given a personal tour with explanations and information about what was on display. A selection of the artwork was taken to show to residents who were unable to attend, and relatives, friends and guests from the local community were also invited to the event.
Everyone was impressed - and not a little surprised - at the range of works on display, which included Barbara M’s beautiful hand-painted orchid and Christina’s detailed cross-stitch and woven artwork. It was no surprise to learn that Christina used to run woven tapestry classes and Anne B, who shared the jumper she was busy knitting, has been a keen knitter all her life. Albert contributed a fantastic dominoes-inspired piece of art and autumn wreath, and Ray’s very first piece of artwork was displayed – a pencil sketch of a fan.
Team Members Add Extra Creativity
Photography also played a significant part in the exhibition, with Janine, David and Barbara M capturing images from around the gardens like real professionals, using both SLR cameras and mobile phones. Barbara C, Barbara M, Beryl, Hilary and Daphne created beautiful flower pressings, while many residents, including Bob and Valerie, contributed to a colourful collection of handmade cards. Parris Lawn’s team members also shared their own creative talents, bringing in acrylic paintings, handmade costumes, glassware and quilling.
More than anything, the exhibition was a celebration of creativity in many forms and it was wonderful to see such a range of talents brought together. Residents admitted they hadn’t realised just how artistic and creative their fellow residents were, and how many different mediums of art it was possible to create – not just paintings. With National Day of Arts in Care Homes 2027 already in the diary, the hope is that after this year’s event, more residents and team members realise that ‘art’ can be anything you want it to be – and will be inspired to take part!
