The Orchard Residents Celebrate Healthy Eating With A Superfood Salad Session

15th September 2026

Last week residents, team members and guests took part in a creative and informative session at The Orchard, which featured food, facts and a generous helping of fun.

Residents and Guests Gather for MasterChef-Style Activity

Part of the Caring Homes ‘Support to Live Life, Your Way’ campaign, the afternoon’s activity was designed to show that eating what’s good for you – especially in older age – can also be an enjoyable experience. Relatives and local ladies from McCarthy & Stone joined residents from The Orchard Nursing Home - Shelia, Erica, Norman, David, Olive, Hilda and Anne - for an interactive session about the importance of healthy living.

Everyone sat at tables, each in front of their own station set out with utensils, mixing bowls and a list of ingredients – just like MasterChef! The Orchard’s Head Chef, Rodney, had chosen a Superfood Salad for the activity and the participants discovered they would be creating a dish using kale, avocado, coriander, cucumber, tomato, quinoa, lemon and olive oil, plus a protein of their choice – either chicken, chickpeas or feta cheese.

Superfood Salad Packs a Nutritional Punch

Before everyone got started, Julie, The Orchard’s Senior Wellbeing Coordinator, explained why the Superfood Salad had been chosen, describing the health benefits of each ingredient. They certainly combined to pack a real punch – with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre in one tasty dish.

Julie also started a group conversation by asking questions, for example, why are avocados considered a source of healthy fats, why is fresh lemon good for you and why is protein an important part of our diet? Residents, relatives, team members and guests were all keen to share their thoughts, discussing their favourite healthy ingredients and revealing which foods they liked and those they weren’t keen on.

Selecting, Mixing, Tasting, Chatting – All Part of a Creative Session

Julie and Rodney gave a step-by-step demonstration on how to prepare the Superfood Salad, then it was time for the participants to get stuck in. Everyone had the chance to be creative and put on chef’s gloves to mix their chosen ingredients by hand – the best way to get everything evenly distributed and help the flavours combine to shine! It was a fantastic opportunity for the group to learn, get involved and most importantly, have fun making and tasting the finished dish.

During the activity, there was a lot of chat and plenty of laughter – and some newfound enthusiasm for healthy eating. Resident Sheila remarked, “I wasn’t going to try the salad, but I ate every last bit!”

A Sociable Activity Where Everyone Learned – and Laughed – a Lot

Looking back on how well the session was received, Head Chef Rodney said, “We loved having the chance to show our residents how important food is, so rather than just enjoying a nutritious meal, we brought the food to life by sharing interesting facts and involving them in a fun group session. We’re always looking to create opportunities for conversation and interaction at mealtimes and the more we share about the food we eat, the more engaged our residents become”.

The Superfood Salad masterclass was a huge success and really brought home the campaign theme - ‘Support to Live Life, Your Way’. Through taking part in a sociable activity, everyone created a dish to suit their own tastes and at the same time, learned how a balanced diet can benefit health and improve quality of life. It was also great fun – a sentiment reflected by one of the guests from McCarthy & Stone who exclaimed, “Thank you so much for always inviting us to your events. We love coming here!”
