Wytham House Trip to Farmoor Reservoir

Residents at Wytham House recently enjoyed a lovely bus trip around our local Farmoor Reservoir on one of our regular trips out of the home.

As it was such a nice day and the sun was shining we took the opportunity to take eight of our residents out and explore this local highlight.

We are very lucky and fortunate at Wytham House to live so close to this beautiful spot. In fact, from the grounds of Oaken Holt Estate we have a stunning view across our gardens and parklands but it is great to be able to visit the site and see it up close.

Farmoor Reservoir is the largest single area of open water in the county, and is probably its most-visited birdwatching site as we can attest to with the wide variety of birds we saw on the day. The combination of open reservoir, woodland, award-winning wetlands and meadows attracts a great variety of birds and in autumn, the site is ideally situated to draw in migrating and wintering birds and has produced an impressive list of rarities, including many county firsts.

We also experienced a ‘first’ for one of our residents as well! We had lots of fun playing ‘Name that Bird’, and we were amazed to see no less than five swans – they are such beautiful and majestic creatures. One of our residents, Alan was thrilled as he said “he had never seen a swan in the flesh before” so it was great to share a brand new experience with him.

We can’t wait to visit again and who knows what birds and/or wildlife we’ll see next time.
