Game, Set And Match For Blenheim Court Resident, Derek
Wimbledon fan Derek, swapped Blenheim Court for Centre Court when he was given the opportunity to live the dream at this year’s Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
A Dream Come True – Part 2
A trip to Wimbledon had been on Derek’s bucket list for some time and he finally ticked it off last year when he was treated to a day out at the tournament. Since then, he’s taken every chance to tell anyone who will listen about what he describes as one of the best days of his life, so he couldn’t believe his luck when he was once again gifted tickets to the world’s most prestigious tennis championships.
Surprises in Store for the Blenheim Tennis Party
Blenheim Court Home Manager Sam was nominated tour leader for the big day and Wellbeing Lead Cyndi had volunteered to drive everyone to London in the minibus. Derek was accompanied by Ian, one of Blenheim Court’s wonderful housekeepers and a genuine tennis lover, who has spent many hours watching and discussing Wimbledon with Derek in his room. Ian’s passion for tennis is only rivalled by his dedication to Blenheim Court, where nothing is too much trouble if it means improving life for the residents. Sam declared that being able to surprise Ian with a ticket this year felt like the perfect way to say thank you and Cyndi was also rewarded for all her hard work with a ticket to the tennis when another resident was unable to make the trip.
Pimm’s, Strawberries and Rain Showers – Classic Wimbledon!
It was a happy and excited group that travelled together in the minibus and despite some showery weather in SW19, spirits stayed high throughout the day. A classic Pimm’s was the perfect way to mark the group’s arrival and when the rain came, they took cover while Cyndi braved the downpour to source some official Wimbledon umbrellas. Blenheim Court’s chef had put together a delicious, packed lunch and Sam volunteered to take on the challenge of the long queue to get strawberries and cream for everyone – an essential Wimbledon treat.
Incredible Tennis Completes the Perfect Day
A highlight for both Derek and Sam was watching Cameron Norrie’s incredible four-hour battle on court, where he secured a hard-fought win over Jarry. “I can’t believe we are back here again!”, said an ecstatic Derek. For Ian, the ultimate thrill was watching the last – and biggest – match of the day featuring the phenomenal Alcaraz, live from Centre Court. While Ian and Derek stayed to take in every moment, Cyndi and Sam ventured off in search of food, knowing the group would need something to keep them going for the long journey home, which ended back at Blenheim Court just shy of midnight!
One of the most moving moments of the day came when Derek tackled a set of stairs – something he hadn’t managed for many years. His determination was inspiring and showed how much this day meant to him.
Whilst none of the group can name all the players they saw (“Thankfully, we have the photos”, laughed Sam), the experience will be talked about for years to come. It was a day full of laughter, camaraderie, shared stories, and unforgettable memories.
“It was a wonderful day – if I could go again, I’d go every year”, Derek reflected, and who knows – he just might!
