Music And Laughter As Guysfield Celebrate Care Home Open Week With A Summer Barbecue
With Care Home Open Week in the diary months in advance, the Wellbeing team at Guysfield had plenty of time to plan one of their trademark action-packed days.
Entertainment was booked, menus were designed, invitations sent and as Care Home Open Week approached, residents at Guysfield Residential Care Home in Letchworth started to make decorations ready for Friday 20th June - the big day, when everything would come together around a fabulous summer barbecue.
Pristine Gardens and Perfect Weather
When the day itself arrived, the gardens at Guysfield were already looking pristine and bright with summer flowers, thanks to a gardening day in May where families and friends joined residents to roll up their sleeves and get everything in perfect condition for the summer ahead.
The sun shone brightly as tables and chairs were arranged in the shady parts of the garden, along with the barbecue which was put in position while chefs began food preparation in the kitchen. After lunch, family members started to arrive and settled in the garden. Meanwhile, the arts and crafts stall and tombola were set up by Angela, daughter of one of the residents, and her husband. Elliot, who looks after everything maintenance-related at Guysfield, fired up the barbecue, assisted by Trevor whose wife is a resident, and a drinks trolly did the rounds to make sure everyone stayed hydrated.
Fabulous Entertainment and a Top Notch Barbecue
Upbeat music got everyone in the party mood, ready for the star turn – entertainer, and Guysfield resident favourite, Magenta Slipperz, who arrived at 3pm to perform. There was dancing, singing and laughter all round – the ideal scenario for resident Carol who remarked that she loves the fresh air and that music makes her feel good.
After so much fun, a planned barbecue break was perfectly timed. Freshly cooked burgers, hot dogs and delicious salads were served alongside some tasty vegetarian options, followed by ice cream and sweet treats. Ken, husband of resident Rose, commented that the burgers were “the best he’d ever had” and that he’d had a lovely time with everyone. He especially enjoyed the chance to dance with his wife as it had been a long time since they’d danced together.
A Happy Day Full of Fun and Kindness
After break the party continued. Meanwhile, the arts and craft stall and tombola had been doing a roaring trade and all the money raised was donated to the Wellbeing team – a lovely gesture as the team will put the proceeds towards a variety of activities for the residents. Resident Rose’s daughter, Loraine, won a picture on the tombola and donated it back to Guysfield – a kindness that encapsulated the wonderful spirit of the day.
Resident Valerie put it best of all, saying that “The lemonade was out of this world, the food was amazing and music was lovely”. It was a day when, once again at Guysfield, priceless memories were made and bonds were strengthened between the residents, their families and friends, the Guysfield team and the local community.
