Mellish House Residents Mark The 80th Anniversary Of VE Day With A Patriotic Tea Party
The 80th Anniversary of VE Day was celebrated with enthusiasm at Mellish House as residents recounted memories, enjoyed a fabulous afternoon tea and listened to live music.
Looking Back 80 Years
The day began with residents gathering to watch the live broadcast from London, including the parade and service. This was a time for reminiscence for the Mellish House residents who were around during World War 2 and shared their recollections and thoughts on the Victory in Europe celebrations.
Resident Joyce proudly sported a headband with two mini Union Jacks for the day. She recounted stories for the team and relatives, including how she was evacuated from her home town and ended up sharing her life at the time with a friend, who would become her best friend. Resident Joyce was a short-hand typist for the Bank of England in the City, then went on to work for the Ministry of Defence on something much more glamorous - the Concord Aeroplane Project! Resident John had only just been born but over the past years, he has travelled around and collected poppies and badges to display on one of his favourite hats – a way of showing his continued support. John is a true patriotic gent, keen to share his experiences and his pride and passion for helping others.
Live Entertainment and an Afternoon Tea Celebration
Next up - singer Serena, a favourite guest who regularly performs for residents at Mellish House in Sudbury, Suffolk. Serena put on a wonderful live show which was very well received and followed by another popular activity - afternoon tea! With a delicious selection of cakes and sweet treats on offer and music that encouraged dancing and laughter, it was an afternoon tea party full of fun and patriotic chatter.
Reflections on the past were an important part of the day, but the present-day gathering was made even more special by the many relatives who joined throughout – an opportunity to make new memories whilst marking a significant anniversary.
