Chelsea Flower Show Inspiration For Guysfield’s Gardening Day

29th May 2025

When the annual Chelsea Flower Show hits the headlines, you know that summer has arrived – and gardening fans at Guysfield were inspired to give their outside space some special attention.

Guysfield’s Celebration of Gardening

A Guysfield Gardening Day was planned and it was decided to mark the occasion by holding the gathering on the opening day of this year’s Chelsea Flower show – May 20th.

Residents’ family and friends were invited to Guysfield Residential Care Home in Letchworth and the event was promoted to the local community on the home’s Facebook page. Everyone was welcome, whether bringing green fingered expertise, or just coming along to help out and enjoy the fresh air.

Planning, Fundraising and Donations

Planning began in advance with Elliot, the home’s Senior Maintenance Officer, creating planters out of recycled materials. The team had received some kind donations from family members and there was already money in the kitty raised by the sale of Guysfield’s lovely homemade Easter wreaths. The proceeds were spent on a selection of paint and lots of beautiful plants which, alongside a band of enthusiastic volunteers, was everything needed to bring the garden to life.

The Garden Comes to Life under Sunny Skies

On May 20th, the activity took place under blue skies and the sun shone brightly as assorted gardeners and helpers rolled up their sleeves and started work. As well as giving their time, friends and family members had generously donated props and supplies – not only lots of lovely plants, but ornaments, hand painted flower pots, and solar lights. The team was also delighted to be gifted water butts, hanging pots, a bird bath and a garden furniture set.

For the next few hours, volunteers painted, tided, weeded, cleaned and refreshed furniture, and of course, planted new plants. Family member, Trevor, was an enthusiastic participant and enjoyed getting stuck in filling terracotta pots with colour. Herbs and bee friendly flowers were introduced to the garden as well as lettuce. so residents are hoping to eat home-grown salad soon!

Refreshments were served as a ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers and everyone was delighted with how fresh and bright the garden looked. It was a lovely way to spend time together creating a garden that is both beautiful and safe for Guysfield’s residents to enjoy this summer and beyond.
