Celebrating International Nurses Day at Brooklyn House
Finding out about Florence
The official date for the annual celebration - 12th May - was chosen to coincide with Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Viewed as the pioneer of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale was a familiar name to residents at Brooklyn House, but they were keen to find out more. We all know about Florence", said resident Vera," but didn't know much about her back story". So, the Wellbeing team shared some nuggets of Florence Nightingale history with the residents – a great way to put everything into perspective as part of celebrating their very own Brooklyn House nurses and the difference they make every day.
A Lovely Treat for Two Generations of Nurses
Cakes were kindly donated by a local Tesco and little keyrings were produced as gifts for the nursing staff, who were very happy to be recognised. International Nurses Day was also an opportunity for nursing generations at Brooklyn House to share memories. Much loved resident Ann Kerrison is a retired nurse and was delighted to be included. "It's a wonderful surprise," said Ann. “The cakes are a lovely treat". Ann was a nurse for 40 years and spent 30 years nursing children in a local children’s hospice.
Current Brooklyn House nurse, Lisa, also has wealth of experience to share. Having trained in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London, she has worked in hospitals, as a district nurse and as a practice nurse.
Teacup Flower Activity Rounds Off a Happy Day
Residents were inspired by stories from the day and continued to chat later that afternoon while arranging teacup flowers and enjoying a cup of tea. The sunny weather meant they could get creative outside in the garden, and residents Arthur, Vera, Linda, Daphne and Alan and his wife, were in their element. All keen gardeners – and sun worshipers – they produced some beautiful, colourful arrangements which were taken inside and enjoyed by all.
Flowers, cupcakes and inspirational stories from the past and present made for a very happy day at Brooklyn House, as the contribution of their fabulous nursing team was celebrated by all at every opportunity on this year’s International Nursing Day.
