Sweet Treat at Gildawood Court

Residents at Gildawood Court care home can now take their own trip down memory lane thanks to an old-fashioned sweet shop that has been set up at the home.

The specialist dementia home has opened ‘Sweet Memories’ – an on site ‘shop’ which stocks a range of traditional sweets such as black jacks, liquorice allsorts and pear drops.

Each resident has been given their own ‘ration book’ so that they can pop in and choose their favourite sweets before making a note of their selection in their book.

Then, when the shop closes, it turns into a bar and has the feel of a real pub where residents can enjoy time with their friends and families. The pub is decorated with pictures and posters of VE Day, and Lyons Tea. Men’s sports afternoons are also enjoyed in the ‘pub’.

Gildawood’s Activities Coordinator Pam Local feels the new ‘shop’ and ‘pub’ are a welcome addition to Gildawood Court. She said:

‘The sweet shop and pub were set up to add a hint of nostalgia to the residents’ visits. We have been delighted with their reaction and we feel it’s added to the social atmosphere here at Gildawood.

‘It’s important for residents to be able to reminisce over childhood memories and other milestones in their lives and hopefully ‘Sweet Memories’ helps them to do this.’

Located in the quiet village of Attleborough, less than a mile from Nuneaton in Warwickshire, Gildawood Court provides specialist dementia care in two purpose-built buildings for up to 60 elderly people.
