Main Library at Home of Compassion becomes an official library

It is a little know secret that Surrey County Council provide a superb scheme called Library Direct to deliver books and volunteer librarians to Nursing Homes; and we managed to tick the boxes and get it all up and running.

A selection of delighted residents are reading themselves silly and our main library has a new lease of life.  Favourites seem to be autobiographies by the famous and brave.  Patricia had her nose in The Crossing by James Cracknell and Ben Fogle; she managed to finish it within 48 hours!  Dogs with Jobs was a popular choice and the David Jason autobiography “My Life” was snatched up quickly.

Our two lovely volunteers, Roz and Sally, will visit with a trolley full of books the first Monday of every month.  The residents get to request books of their choice and they get a full six weeks before they have to renew.  Many titles are in large print or available in the spoken word format for those with Visual Impairment.  And all of this has been provided free of charge.

We cannot thank Surrey County Council enough for this service, it really has added to our “village within our home” feel and the residents are already looking forward to their next visit.  Word has gone round like wild fire, and we are sure the numbers of attendees will grow on each visit – good job our library is so big.

And if you fancy a quiet uninterrupted read whilst all this is going on, please don’t panic, we have another smaller library placed in the Chapel Wing.  Aren’t we lucky?

Home of Compassion is dedicated to providing the highest level of residential, nursing and dementia care for up to 71 elderly residents. The luxurious care home is set in delightful surroundings in the heart of Thames Ditton, with beautiful views over the river.
