Lilting Tunes at Galsworthy House
It is not just our eager entertainers that are tinkling the ivories at Galsworthy House in Kingston upon Thames. Tony, one of our residents, sits and practices on our piano each and every day and his cohorts love it.
Tony has always been musical. He mastered the Hawaiian guitar as a child, which is interestingly placed on the lap to play. As an adult he purchased a piano and has never looked back. His pianist skills are completely self taught which is immensely impressive as he uses both hands and plays quite complex pieces. Wherever he has lived, there has been a piano in situ and he certainly was not going to compromise when he entered a nursing home environment!
When he first learnt the lap guitar he used sheet music but soon discovered that he could replicate a tune just by listening to it. In fact, he has never used sheet music for his piano playing or received any lessons, which is astounding given the variety and difficultly level of the melodies we hear lightly lilting around our building.
