The English Symphony Orchestra at Mill House

At Mill House nursing home in Chipping Campden, we were very lucky to have an exclusive concert ‘Music to Lift the Spirit’ on 26th January, performed at our home by two members of the world-leading English Symphony Orchestra.

The performance was part of a tour by the orchestra aimed at sharing the joys of live music with care home residents and we were thrilled when they contacted us in January to ask if we would be interested and to arrange the day. Of course, we said yes immediately as we knew just how much our residents and team would enjoy this event.

Performing were the delightful and very talented duo, Corinne Frost on Cello and Stephen Warner playing Double Bass, Classical Guitar & Ukulele. Their performance included classics and favourites such as – Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two), Moon River, My Favourite Things (from The Sound of Music), Chim Chim Cher-ee & Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious  (from Mary Poppins), Londonderry Air (Danny Boy) and A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square. They even played Happy Birthday to two of our residents, who were thrilled at their very own special birthday treat.

Comments received were:

”The sound of the orchestra in the home was beautiful, well done guys.”

After the concert, the musicians mingled and chatted with everyone over a cup of tea and cake. We really could not have squeezed another person in the room or got bigger smiles from our residents and guests.

At Mill House, as well as having the ability to trigger memories, we know that research has shown that the performance of live music enhances the quality of life of elderly people, reduces agitation, stress and the perception of pain. Evidence also demonstrates improved communication, greater levels of understanding between residents and staff and the reduction in the need for medication to alleviate distress.

It truly was a magical day and performance and we say a huge big thank you again to the English Symphony Orchestra for choosing our home to perform in.  We would also like to say a big thank you also to Janet Hipkiss from The Organic Hair Angels who kindly co-sponsored the event with us. We look forward to working with them further and our plans to organise a men’s wet shave barber day here at our home.

Rumour has it that one of these musicians might be coming back soon to do a solo spot, but that’s all we can reveal for now…

Why not come back to our news page and find out what else we have been getting up to at Mill House and what’s coming up.

At Mill House, we deliver the highest standards of residential, nursing and dementia care for up to 45 elderly residents in a friendly and supportive environment.
