East Hill House walkers raise £400 for the Alzheimer’s Society

Residents, relatives and friends of East Hill House care home in Liss, took part in a memory walk in aid of World Alzheimer’s Day raising over £400 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Many of the participants were walking to pay tribute to loved ones who have battled the condition or those living with it. The weather was kind on the day, with just a brief shower on route. Passers-by donated their loose change into a collection bucket and cheered on the walkers.

Everyone who took part had a very welcome break and cup of tea or coffee, kindly donated by The Plump Duck in Petersfield Heath, before continuing on the walk to complete a distance of more than 4km! At the completion of the walk, everyone enjoyed a lovely picnic provided by the head chef at East Hill House.

Home manager Samantha Booty said “What a wonderful day out we had raising money for a cause very close to our hearts. We walked for many different reasons, but more than anything else it provides us with an opportunity to pay tribute to a special person in our lives. We’d like to thank everyone who took part and The Plump Duck for providing their refreshments free of charge. We’re already looking forward to 2017!”

Alzheimer’s disease is often called a family disease, because the chronic stress of watching a loved one slowly decline affects everyone. Alzheimer’s Society research shows 850,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia. In less than 10 years a million people will be living with the condition and this is expected to double by 2051.
