Residents at Galsworthy House in Kingston upon Thames welcomed the return of their favourite opera singer Becky back to the home over the summer. Here is what Becky has to say about how important it is to have activities like this in our care homes:
“Hello, I am Becky Burraway, a classical singer who performs regularly for the wonderful residents at Galsworthy House. During my studies, I pursued a module on ‘The Psychology of Music’ and was astonished by the positive way in which music impacts people’s lives in care.
“This inspired me to get in touch with Galsworthy House who were one of my local care homes at the time and the rest is history! I have been performing at Galsworthy House for four years now and it is the most rewarding work that I have ever done.
“To cater to everyone’s tastes, I perform a wide variety of different music genres including Opera/Classical, Musical Theatre, Movies, War-time, Jazz and Pop. I chose each song carefully to ensure that they are songs everyone will remember and love. I always strive to make the performances as upbeat as possible to create a fun and uplifting atmosphere.
“We all have music in common, therefore it is great to see everyone bonding by singing and dancing together every time I visit. I always remark that we are the ‘Galsworthy Choir’ as everyone gets so involved with the music.
“The staff are also fantastic and ensure that everyone is having the best possible time - you can really see how deeply they care for the residents. My aim is always to brighten everyone’s day and they always end up brightening my day too!”
