Remembrance Day at Mill House

The Residents at Mill House celebrated Remembrance Day with a sing-a-long musical session on Friday 11th November.

After the three minute silence in the morning, we sought to remember those who went before us in other ways, so in the afternoon a very cheerful atmosphere permeated the home as we remembered, sang old songs and waved flags.

Everyone was very happy to wear a poppy to remember the members of our armed forces who have died in the line of duty and to commemorate the end of hostilities of World War I, on this date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Most of the residents were born around the time of the war and have so many stories to tell, some good and some not so good.  Our session was a time of reflection but also a celebration of life and hearing stories about what life was like during this time.

They all remember the times of rations and bombing and people they lost during the conflict.  Some of them say people today do not know what it is like to live the lives they had to during the war and for some, as young children they do not remember much about the war at all.

We had a very thoughtful Remembrance Day here at Mill House and the residents enjoyed chatting about it all. We are proud to have participated in our own very small way to this very special occasion.
