The Felix Stowaways Bring Maritime Magic To Cotman House

18th April 2024

The FelixStowaways, who describe themselves as the ultimate ‘buoy’ band, entertained residents with lively melodies which told tales of seafaring escapades and salty sailors. Feet were tapping in the audience from the start, with classics like "Drunken Sailor" proving popular, as did all the group’s wonderfully sung harmonies which evoked a time when a life on the ocean waves was a combination of adventure, peril and camaraderie.

Singing Sea Shanties

The singing of sea shanties flourished during the 19th century on board large merchant ships – not so much a jolly singalong as necessary encouragement for sailors to get stuck into the tough physical tasks that were required to keep the vessel ship shape. Winching and winding, hauling ropes and setting sails needed coordinated effort and singing these shanties brought rhythm to the task as well as momentum, albeit often through gritted teeth!

The enjoyment was genuine at Cotman House and Lifestyle Coordinator, Jenny, was delighted at how residents responded, commenting, "Our residents were absolutely thrilled to be entertained by the talented crew of the FelixStowaways. Many have spent their lives in and around Felixstowe, so the performance reminded them of the sights, sounds, and smells of the sea, and sparked plenty of conversation afterwards.”

Musical Delight

As well as the joy of music and stories brought brilliantly to life, a visit from the FelixStowaways is just one example of how residents at Cotman House stay close to the local community. Making connections and sharing experiences – especially those inspired by creativity – are important to the lives and wellbeing of all residents, and the team values friendships and alliances made with many groups in the area.

On this occasion, imaginations were well and truly stirred by the FelixStowaways whose rousing shanties conjured vivid pictures of life at sea to take everyone on a thrilling and superbly musical ride!
