Introducing Coxhill Choir ….

Coxhill Manor nursing home in Woking has formed its very own choir and its going from strength to strength.

Sarah Clay is our official Choirmaster. She graduated from Cambridge in music and has much experience in developing and running community choirs alongside teaching music.  We are blessed to have Sarah working with us. She has a great rapport with our residents and we all very much look forward to her coming in.  Choir is undoubtedly becoming a firm favourite at Coxhill!

Sarah brings her own keyboard and starts our sessions with breathing exercises and lots of ‘ahhs’ and ‘ooohs’ to get our vocal chords warmed up and ready to go for a well structured and fun session. Her energy and enthusiasm is inspiring and motivating, and she really gets us singing. Properly singing.   Just listening to the choir leaves you with a sense of pride and a few goosebumps!

And it’s not just residents in the choir.  Johns wife Hannah joins us, as does Clifford’s daughter Libby and Richards daughter Liz.  How wonderful to sing with your loved one and share such a beautiful experience together. Priceless.

We gave our first ever performance at our summer BBQ.  We each wore a red rose corsage to display our collective identity, and entertained our fellow residents, guests and staff with our versions of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’, It’s a Wonderful World’, ‘Don’t Worry be Happy’ and ‘Amazing Grace’.  You had to hear it to believe it.  We are currently practicing for our Christmas performance on December 8th and look forward to wearing our red rose corsages with pride!

Singing has many benefits– it raises self-esteem, makes us feel good (certainly gets the endorphins released) and nurtures a sense of belonging and well-being which can last long after a choir practice – not to mention a jolly good  a workout for the brain, lungs and vocal chords!

Of course at Coxhill we do a lot of music based ‘activity’ with our residents – such as reminiscence through music, sing a longs, music quizzes to name a few.  Music can transcend all level of cognition and ability and is a medium to connect people in a really  positive way.  But the choir has added a new quality dimension to our music.

Manager Alan said one his dreams for Coxhill was to develop our own choir and we are pleased to have achieved that dream under the brilliance of Sarah.
