Gildawoods ghouly activities

Our activities team at Gildawood Court care home in Nuneaton sat with a group of residents and assisted them with carving pumpkins getting ready for Halloween.

We like to create activities for the residents around holiday celebrations, it helps them remember what they may have done with their own children and grandchildren, bringing back happy memories. Residents picked templates for their pumpkin face designs and assisted with scooping out the seeds of the pumpkin. They described the seeds as being very slimy to touch and that it had a rather unpleasant pumpkin-ey smell.

We saved the flesh from the carved pumpkins and our kitchen staff made this into a pie. When the residents tasted the pie, it received mixed results! It seems pumpkin is an acquired taste!

Our activities team reminisced with the residents and they talked about how Halloween wasn’t celebrated as much when they were younger and we talked of the differences today.

Our activities coordinator decorated our main hallway with drawings and items the residents had made, including coloured in pumpkins, spiders and bats. We had pretty lace bunting made for the occasion with a seasonal orange and black design.

The activities coordinator bought in cakes and decorations including coloured icing and edible eyes. The residents chose their design from templates and decorated their cakes. They really enjoyed eating them afterwards with a cup of tea!

At Gildawood Court, we offer a full range of dementia care support including trial stays, short stay and convalescent care as well as long-term care.
