Doris hits 104 at Knowle Park

The day itself was marked by a party for Doris, her family and friends and all of the residents and staff at the 19th Century former Manor House.

Doris Muriel Bowern was born in the Surrey village of Long Ditton, near Surbiton on 30th March 1909. She was the younger of two sisters, with Vera two years her senior. Her family moved to Surbiton around the time of the First World War, at which time her Father unfortunately died in action in Ypres. Shortly after this tragic time, Doris joined the Girls Life Brigade at Oaklands Baptist Church when she was 11 and remained a member for the next 33 years.

Doris met her husband to be, Robert (known as Bob) at Oaklands and they married in 1932, when she was 23. They bought a house in New Malden and settled there for a number of years. When the Second World War broke out, Bob was engaged in manufacturing for the war and joined the Home Guard, whilst Doris joined the New Malden First Aid Post where she got involved in producing plays and operettas.

In 1953, Doris and Bob moved to Cranleigh, where they successfully operated two retail businesses. This enabled them to buy a 15th Century cottage in Dunsfold, which they worked hard to refurbish over several years. Through this time, Doris sang in the Cranleigh Choral Society and joined the W.I. where she maintained her love of amateur dramatics. After retiring, Doris continued to indulge her creative streak as she took up oil painting, a hobby she continued to enjoy upon moving to Knowle Park in 2005, where she has played an active part in home life since.

Located on the outskirts on Cranleigh in Surrey, Knowle Park is a magnificent early 19th Century Manor House that has been sensitively restored to provide residential and nursing care for up to 43 elderly ladies and gentleman. The home is run by the family-owned Caring Homes Group, which was founded in 1994 by mother and son team, Helena and Paul Jeffery.
