Flower Power at L’Hermitage

Eight residents of L’Hermitage Care Centre and Beaumont Villa Dementia Unit enjoyed a day out at Jersey’s Annual Battle of Flowers recently.

The ‘battle’ dates back to 1902 when Jersey held a parade to celebrate the Coronation of Kind Edward Vll and Queen Alexandra. The event was so successful that it was turned into an annual tradition. In the early days the floats were mostly horse-drawn and covered in floral decorations. The tradition was to tear a flower off the float and throw it to a lady in the crowd. Flowers were sometimes thrown back and hence Battle was born.

The residents joined in as the flower decorated floats paraded up and down, accompanied by street performers, bands, musicians, unicycle riders etc. The day was made even better by the clear blue skies, glorious sunshine and fantastic picnic prepared by the home’s chef.

The Battle is a major community project and one that the home’s residents are always keen to be involved in. Two of the residents even found fame as they were interviewed live on Radio Jersey – Doreen about years gone by when she was annually involved in the float building and parade itself and Betty who was attending her 43rd Battle of Flowers Parade.

Competition is fierce; the larger floats of up to 45ft compete for the major award Prix d’Honneur. Islanders of all ages work relentlessly in the weeks leading up to the Battle in warehouses and sheds, patiently working with dried flowers and harestails (lagurus grass) making intricate patterns and designs. The night before Battle the whole island is "abuzz" with many helpers working all night sticking the many thousands of fresh flowers on to their floats. The fresh flowers are predominately locally–grown asters and chrysanthemums which have been shipped in from the United Kingdom and Holland.

The event reaches its finale each year with a Spectacular Moonlight Parade and concludes with a firework display over Jersey’s Elizabeth Castle.

The talk of the home the morning after was all about the spectacular parade and the strange places the confetti they were showered in has managed to get!
