Denise Welch came to visit Kingsclear Care Home via the power of Zoom. You may have read a story that over the last few months, Denise has formed a good friendship with the Deputy Manager, Helen, after they began to interact on Twitter about mental health in care homes during the pandemic.
Helen and Denise started the conversation by discussing the difficulties that care homes have faced and how Kingsclear’s staff have worked so hard to maintain the resident’s morale.
Helen then took Denise on a tour of Kingsclear to show her how homes have changed over the years. Denise was very impressed with the set up at the home and in particular, the resident’s artistic abilities – she has a keen interest in art as her husband, Lincoln, is an artist.
After the tour, Denise went on to meet Maureen and Evelyn to discuss life in care homes and how they have been coping during the pandemic. Maureen was a little star-struck to begin with as she is a massive fan of Denise from her Coronation Street days and also from Loose Women. Maureen and Denise discussed mental health how they have both had their struggles. Maureen praised Denise for all of the work she has been doing and said that she is right to care for those that are vulnerable.
When Denise spoke with Evelyn, they discussed how Evelyn had only recently moved in and what drove her decision. They talked about how Evelyn had felt lonely during lockdown and wanted to make some new friends to make life more exciting.
Denise has told Helen that she would now like to support Kingsclear and visit us each week to speak with the residents and staff to see how we are all getting on. We are delighted to have Denise as an advocate for us here and very much hope that, someday soon, she will be able to visit us in person.
