Brooklyn House Celebrates VE Day With Music And Memories
As the 80th anniversary of VE Day approached, residents and the team at Brooklyn House Care Home in Attleborough prepared to mark the occasion with an event to remember.
Decking the House in Red, White and Blue
A Brooklyn House party is always meticulously planned and this was no exception. The Wellbeing team had done a wonderful job the previous day, decking out the home in a sea of red, white and blue. Cheerful bunting, Union Jack flags and poppies created a fantastic backdrop for the tables, which the team set out in street party style complete with VE Day tablecloths, cups and plates. The scene was set!
Meanwhile the kitchen staff had been creating a fabulous buffet feast with popular party favourites including cream cheese & cucumber, ham and Coronation chicken sandwiches, sausage rolls and a mouth-watering selection of cakes and scones.
Residents, Families and Friends Enjoy Music and Shared Memories
As guests arrived, the excitement began to grow. Residents gathered to take their places at the table joined by families and friends, which made the occasion feel extra special. There was a lot of lovely chattering during lunch, with VE Day themed music in the background, and some of the residents and team members sporting 1940’s fashion.
The 80th anniversary of VE Day gave residents an opportunity to share memories from the time, including Sylvia, who recalled how her father had collected her from her evacuation home in Somerset and taken her back home to look after the baby. "The couple who I was staying with were so angry and told dad, he should be looking after the baby”, Sylvia explained. “I remember VE day and everyone celebrating, us kids had a party in the street." Resident Cyril who was only young at the time, described seeing a plane crashing as he walked to school and remembers American airmen throwing parties for all the children at the airfields – something that Norfolk had many of.
‘Pin the Cigar on Churchill’
After lunch there was quick round of ‘Pin the Cigar on Churchill’ which caused much amusement, then it was time to settle into comfy chairs for the 40's singalong. Everyone sang their hearts out, led by Brooklyn’s VE Day Dolls Cat & Skye, aka the Wellbeing team, and the repertoire included much-loved wartime songs featuring singers such as Vera Lynn, Bing Crosby & Flannigan & Allan.
It was a joyful day filled with music, memories and a lot of fun – the perfect way to celebrate a landmark date in history, alongside by friends, family and a wonderful team.
