Wytham House welcomes a Little Donkey at Christmas

At Wytham House care home in Farmoor, we love to make every occasion special and as it is the festive season, what would be better than to bring the memorable and popular Christmas Carol, ‘Little Donkey’ to life and invite a very special four legged visitor, a rescue donkey, to visit our home and residents.

The Activities Coordinator at Wytham House, Liza had arranged with Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary to come to Wytham House and we were delighted when they arrived with one of their rescue donkeys, Tracey.

Tracey turned up in her little horse trailer at 11am to spend two hours with us and she was the sweetest natured animal. With much anticipation, our residents and team eagerly welcomed her into our home where she received lots of attention and petting. She wore a homemade donkey nappy much to the amusement of everyone she met.

She was introduced by one of the volunteers from the sanctuary, Linda, who told us Tracey was 25 years old and could live until 50. Liza, accompanied them and they both led Tracey to our three lounges to meet our residents. Shock, laughter, disbelief and big smiles greeted us and for those residents who were in their bedrooms we visited them also. Tracy let every resident and member of staff pat her and she posed like a model for every photo taken. She was a real star.

You could tell Tracey really enjoys the human contact and you can see the feeling of calm and joy our residents received from this gentle contact. Our animal loving residents were thrilled to get up close and personal and she even won over those residents, who although they say they are not animal lovers, couldn’t resist her either…

As our sister homes, Oaken Holt Nursing Home and The Coach House are just down the drive from us we thought we would share the joy and pleasure and bring Tracey down there as well. Linda brought her into Oaken Holt and again there was much laughter when they realised that yes, a donkey was wearing a nappy, to prevent any unfortunate accidents. Linda took Tracy around the lounges and communal areas. The residents thoroughly enjoyed seeing the donkey, some saying they hadn’t seen one for years.

While it may not be a dusty road to our homes, Tracy’s story is very heart warming. She had a tough journey but ‘kept on plodding onwards’ and ‘didn’t give up’ as the song goes. She was spotted and rescued by a passer-by who noticed she was very thin and it turned out that her owner had passed away and she had been abandoned. Tracey is one of the lucky ones to have been saved and it is great that she is now giving back to the community by bringing joy and happiness to those that meet her.

We’re not sure who enjoyed the visit more, Tracey or our residents but we know she’s sure to be back judging from the response and the great comments we received.

So Christmas is off to a good start here and we are feeling very festive. From all of us here at Wytham House, Seasons Greetings and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

At Wytham House we offer residential and nursing dementia care provided by outstanding highly-skilled professionals.
