Wytham House goes Oomph!

Residents at Wytham House in Farmoor, Oxfordshire have recently been taking part in Oomph! sessions at our home and they really seem to enjoy these sessions which involve chair exercises that most residents can engage with.

Oomph! is dedicated to transforming the health and quality of life of older people through inclusive exercise and activity classes that improve physical mobility, social interaction and mental stimulation.

The Oomph! sessions focus on familiar music, reminiscence-led imagery and sensory props which are particularly effective for people with dementia. These help create a fun ‘party’ atmosphere that our residents really look forward to.

The most we have had in one session so far is seventeen residents. Both independently mobile and wheelchair users can join in so it’s great to get everyone involved. We even get our guests and visitors joining us too and members of our care team like to get involved too when the pom poms come out.

The music is varied and ranges from such old favourites as Vera Lynn, sing-along songs such as Run Rabbit, to more up to date pop music, Blame it on the Boogie, Ladies Night and Rock the Boat.

Our residents that are more mobile and able to stand also like to have a jive session at the end. It is so good to see them enjoying the music, singing along with the words and dancing together. It’s also a great gentle way to exercise.

Wytham House, a newly-built home, which sits within the Oaken Holt estate in Oxford, offers specialist residential and nursing dementia care. Together with Oaken Holt main house and the Coach House, Wytham House is surrounded by gardens and parkland extending to 23 acres in the heart of rural Oxfordshire.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
To Whom it may concern,

RE: A message from the CEO and Clinical Director

At Caring Homes we are following the latest Government advice and stopping visitors to all our homes, except for essential visits by healthcare professionals who will be required to adhere to strict protocols.

We understand that this may be very difficult for families but we are clear in our duty to ensure we protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our Residents and Colleagues as our top priority.

We want you to know that you can contact your loved ones through calls, emails, video and social media and we will support our Residents to view any messages you send over. We are confident that the teams in our homes are doing all they can to ensure that life remains as comfortable and sociable as possible. There will be a full programme of activities delivered by our in-house health and wellbeing teams.

We hope you will understand and support these actions and any further subsequent measures we might need to put in place.

Yours sincerely
