There’s more Oomph! at Coxhill Manor

Sandra, the Head of Activities at Coxhill Manor nursing home in Chobham, recently attended a 2 day training course with Oomph! and was provided with music, routines, ideas and exercise props, to choreograph and deliver fun chair based exercise with a difference here at our home.

The Oomph! Sessions Sandra has created are innovative and interactive. She updates them regularly and is often seen shut away in her office practicing the routines.

Oomph! isn’t your normal run of the mill exercise – it is based on different movements from life using familiar songs. For example, residents pretend to be driving a car to the song ‘At the Carwash’ using their arms to steer the wheel and their feet to press the pedals.  Resident Philip was a mechanic by trade so loves this one. It does get everyone talking about the cars they drove too…

The songs vary in pace from ‘We’ll Meet Again’ to Zorba the Greek.’ It’s great to see a sitting down version of Zorba the Greek with thigh slapping and hand clapping!  One of Sandra’s personal favourites!!

The exercise props used include brightly coloured pom poms and scarves – so the session can be very visual and tactile too, creating something for everyone.  Residents who may not be able to do some of the exercises can be mesmerised by the colour and movement of the pom poms.

The sessions are rhythmic, fun, stimulating and really do involve everyone – even if it’s just singing along!  Residents are genuinely engaged and having fun.  It’s easy to forget it’s actually an exercise class as everyone enters the spirit of the songs.

After three or four main songs demanding quite a lot of activity and interaction, each session finishes with a cool down song. The one at the moment is Rod Stewarts “I am Sailing’ Residents wave the pom poms as if at a concert or actually flying.  What a great way to end a class.

The residents enjoy well deserved fizzy drink refreshments after the exercise and are always keen to gather up the props too!

Oomph! is a favourite activity at Coxhill Manor, with many residents making sure they never miss a session. Resident Joyce says she really looks forward to coming as it makes her more supple, while other residents say it’s a great vibe and great atmosphere and they carry on doing the exercises afterwards too!

Sandra herself says she loves running the Oomph! sessions – it makes her happy to see the residents engaged and enjoying themselves.

The Oomph classes help our residents maintain and improve physical mobility, alertness, social engagement and self-esteem, but above all it is fun. And when they see Sandra wearing her distinctive Oomph! T-shirt they know they are in for a good time…

And do you know what Oomph! stands for..?  It’s ‘Our Organisation Makes People Happy’.  Well it certainly does here!
