St Patrick’s Day at Frethey House

Residents at Frethey House care home in Taunton, Somerset recently celebrated St Patrick’s Day at their home with many Irish themed activities which took place throughout the day.

Our home was decorated with St Patrick’s day banners, shamrocks and one or two Leprechuans appeared around our home. The Leprechaun is one of Ireland’s more famous and mischievous characters from Irish folklore and most folk remember the tales of being granted three wishes and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Some even wore items of green clothing as this is another tradition for St Patrick’s Day as well as the odd wig in the colours of the national flag of Ireland, frequently referred to as the Irish tricolour.

The day kicked off with morning coffee which was served for those who wanted, with a wee drop of Irish Cream liqueur, accompanied by Foster and Allen music; a duo from Ireland who have entertained for over 40 years with their style and easy listening music, and which evoked many memories for our residents.

After lunch there was a St Patrick’s Day themed quiz, and a good old fashioned Irish sing-a-long with some more old favourites, which was great for our residents as they knew the words and could join in. Some even learnt some new tunes and there was lots of singing and laughter throughout our home.

Following that, we then refuelled with a cup of tea, a delicious Irish tea loaf; a fruit cake and originally known as ‘Brack Irish Tea Bread’. Some of our residents enjoyed another small tipple of Irish Cream Liqueur, accompanied by the music of Daniel O Donnell, another well known entertainer.

All in all we enjoyed a fun packed day!
