Spring is in the air at L’Hermitage and Beaumont Villa

Spring is in the air at L’Hermitage and Beaumont Villa care homes in St Peter, Jersey and with the evenings now lighter and the weather warmer, everyone is in bright spirits and buoyant moods as they look forward to the months ahead.

Over the last few weeks, there has been lots going on at our homes. Our pack of cards have been whipped out so that we can play the old TV game ‘Play Your Cards Right’. The idea of the game is for the participants to progress through the game by predicting whether the next card will be higher or lower than the preceding one. To get control, they have to guess the answer to a question. This can last for quite a while as everyone likes to join in and our home resounds with the calls of HIGHER HIGHER! LOWER LOWER! and of course everyone wants to win a ‘Brucie Bonus’. It’s a really entertaining game which occasionally throws up some surprising results thanks to the luck aspect. It is a real social activity which gets everyone involved and brings back many memories of this classic gameshow that is remembered for its catchphrases such as, “You get nothing for a pair – not in this game.” “It could still be a good night if you play your cards right.” “What do points make?” “PRIZES!” “Hang loose – we’ll be back in a deuce!”

This week we have had some of residents attending art groups which they really enjoy and over the last few weeks we have had a full mini-bus at Musical Memories, a music therapy activity that is held by the local Alzheimer’s Association. The sessions include gentle exercises to help with our residents’ coordination, whilst music and singing stimulate their memory and encourage communication. You don’t need to be able to sing in tune, which is lucky for some of us, and is a great way for our residents to have fun and meet new people. They always feel uplifted and it’s good to see their enthusiasm and happy smiling faces at the end of these sessions.

Forms also went round to all our residents this week, to ask them to compose a few lines of poetry, or just their thoughts about spring. Many have come back and we have continued this activity into our craft sessions. The poems are being stuck onto a white paper plate, and then our residents will be decorating them with fabric flower designs. The plates can then be hung up in their rooms once completed so they and their families and friends can continue to enjoy them.

In the next few weeks, there is a show at the Jersey Opera House; 9-5 The Dolly Parton show, a feel-good musical with new songs by Dolly Parton and is an amateur production by the Jersey Green Room. Some of our residents have expressed they would like to see it so we are all really looking forward to going to this show which promises to be a real musical extravaganza and a great outing.

We also have Easter coming up so have lots planned to celebrate this and we are sure our home will be full of chocolate eggs and bunnies. Many people’s thoughts will also turn to the religious origins of Easter and our Parish Minister will be coming to our home to give a church service for those who wish to attend.

At L’Hermitage care home we provide residential and nursing care for up to 66 elderly people. Beaumont Villa provides specialist dementia care for up to 24 elderly residents.
