Residents, relatives and carers eagerly await egg-citing new arrivals at Tall Trees

Residents, relatives and carers at Tall Trees nursing home have been eagerly waiting for the patter of tiny claws this week as they welcomed chicks to the home following an Incredible Eggs delivery.

The eight chicks have all hatched out and have been doing the rounds at the home meeting all residents who are not able to come to the activities room at the home in Shipton Under Wychwood, Oxfordshire. And the care team hope their feathered friends will become a permanent part of the family as they start to fundraise for a chicken coup for the gardens.

Home manager Michelle Little explained: “We have had an incubator here and hatched out our chicks over the past few days. We always enjoy having animals at the home and to be able to watch and share in the hatching of these chicks has really interesting.

“Many of our residents, including those living with dementia, have been involved and love spending time with these delightful new chicks. We really hope we will be able to keep some of the chickens here in the gardens on a permanent basis.”

Incredible Eggs aims to preserve historic, sometimes rare breeds of poultry, and also to rear the more practical hybrid and utility strains of chicken and duck. Schools, nurseries and care homes get the pleasure of being involved in the hatching process. Birds are returned to Incredible Eggs after a great start in life – hatchlings appear to do much better in small groups with the individual love, care and attention they receive in their early days meaning they get off to a flying start in life.

At Tall Trees we provide personalised nursing, dementia and residential care, for up to 60 elderly residents and were recently rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission .
