Reminiscence boxes at Belmont House

The activities team at Belmont House in Sutton have been busy preparing reminiscence boxes for the residents.

In February they began ordering and collecting bits for the two boxes, a baking set and a gentleman’s night out set. The baking box does not hold as much interest as the other box, both ladies and gentlemen like looking at the items, passing them around, smelling the shoe polish and talking about their nights out, what their Father’s would have worn, places they would have visited. The gentleman in the picture is holding a pipe.

There is also an “At Home” sensory box with 4 smells from home, the box also contains a CD of sounds from the home, but the residents prefer the smells and guessing what they are.

Reminiscence packs are next on the list which Belmont House are collecting for which includes holidays (postcards, leaflets etc.) household names from the 1950’s, and childhood memories. These are a great conversation pieces and are really enjoyed by all.

There are now printed and laminated old pictures of various situations, people and places which are really useful for conversation starters in our regular reminiscence sessions which are held in the lounge downstairs as so many people enjoy these. It is a great way to get together enjoying a chat a cuppa and a delve into their memories. From their chats, activities have printed out other reminiscence pictures about things they discuss such as the Bevin Boys during the war, wash day, Anderson shelters, rationing.

The team are always expanding the reminiscence collection as these sessions are a real come together activity where everyone enjoys talking to each other about their particular experiences from life, and gives them all a chance to really get to know each other and form friendships.
