Praise for person-centred care at Oaken Holt

The team at Oaken Holt Nursing and Residential Home have been praised in the home’s latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection report for providing person-centred, open and dignified care.

Oaken Holt is located in the peaceful village of Farmoor, providing residential and nursing care of the very highest standard for up to 43 elderly residents in the main house and an additional 12 in the adjacent Coach House. The home was rated good in every one of the five CQC sections – safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led – during the inspection which took place in November.

Residents were seen to be treated with dignity and respect with the report stating “We observed many respectful interactions throughout our visit and staff promoting people’s dignity by being discreet, thoughtful and caring.”

The CQC praised the home and said that there was a positive culture that valued people, relatives and staff and promoted a caring ethos that put the residents at the forefront of everything they did.

There was a clear vision to deliver high quality care and support and promote a positive culture that was person-centred, open, inclusive and empowering which achieved good outcomes for people.

Residents were involved in planning their care and in the day to day support they received. Records showed that staff had received training in equality and diversity. One member of the care team told the inspectors “Residents are all individuals, different, and so we treat them as individuals.”

Residents were supported to have sufficient to eat and drink at mealtimes. One person said; “The food is very good and on the odd occasion that I don’t like what is on offer they always do something else that you do like.”

Activities were also praised and the inspectors saw that people were offered a range of activities which they could engage in including arts and crafts, music and games.

Home Manager Theresa Whitford said: “At Caring Homes we want to ensure that our home is just that – a caring home.

“Here at Oaken Holt we are all delighted at the praise we have received from the CQC inspectors following our latest inspection and that we have achieved a Good overall rating.”
