Perfect Pen Pals bridge the generational gap at Home of Compassion

Residents and colleagues at The Home of Compassion Care Home with Nursing in Thames Ditton have set up a pioneering new scheme with their local Primary School, Weston Green, where the children and the residents are joining forces to become pen pals.

There are winners on many levels from this initiative. The teachers are thrilled to have the perfect excuse to be able to show their pupils the time old skill of letter writing.

The motives for the children are simple. Writing about yourself to someone who will take the time to read and be enthralled by your words is a whole new ball game.     The children get to share their lives with someone who is a thoroughly receptive audience.

The residents are naturally delighted to receive their letters and relish replying. Having a young pen friend to correspond with offers many benefits to residents. Writing stimulates regions of the brain responding to visual cues, physical activity, and conscious thought. Whilst sharing emotions such as feeling the joy of receiving a response, activates other parts of the brain. Reminiscence too, plays a key part as the writer relays current or past events. Corresponding with a younger pen pal also provides the chance to see the world through that person’s eyes, providing opportunities to share expertise, experience and also learn something exciting and new.

Over 45 letters are exchanged on a monthly basis, this allows the resident and child to have enough gossip to impart on each occasion.

Home of Compassion is dedicated to providing the highest level of residential, nursing and dementia care for up to 71 elderly residents.

The luxurious care home is set in delightful surroundings in the heart of Thames Ditton, with beautiful views over the river. For more information about Home of Compassion and Caring Homes visit our website at
