Oaken Holt residents go with the flow on the River Thames

Residents from Oaken Holt care home in Farmoor went with the flow this week when they enjoyed a relaxing and sunny afternoon on the River Thames, following a delicious picnic on the river bank which was provided by our chefs Martin and Graziano.

Taking a specially adapted barge equipped with a wheelchair lift and an accessible space for wheelchairs, allowed our residents with mobility difficulties the opportunity to share this experience. We set off and travelled from Eynsham Lock down the river towards Oxford and passed through Pink Hill Lock, where the crew had to stop to manoeuvre the heavy double lock gates. We then continued down the river to the Ferryman Inn, a public house now owned by one of our resident’s son, so we all waved as we floated by.

The return journey was equally relaxing; the boat was skippered by a lady captain who expertly manoeuvred the boat through the locks and made it all look so easy. To make the trip even more enjoyable we all enjoyed a refreshing cup of tea and biscuits that was served to us along the way.

We all agreed it was a glorious afternoon to be on the river with beautiful sunshine and a gentle breeze keeping us cool. We also enjoyed seeing many birds we could spot and there was a wide variety along the route including seagulls, geese and goslings.

All in all, it was a fantastic day. Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the day and we will be coming back for sure.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
To Whom it may concern,

RE: A message from the CEO and Clinical Director

At Caring Homes we are following the latest Government advice and stopping visitors to all our homes, except for essential visits by healthcare professionals who will be required to adhere to strict protocols.

We understand that this may be very difficult for families but we are clear in our duty to ensure we protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our Residents and Colleagues as our top priority.

We want you to know that you can contact your loved ones through calls, emails, video and social media and we will support our Residents to view any messages you send over. We are confident that the teams in our homes are doing all they can to ensure that life remains as comfortable and sociable as possible. There will be a full programme of activities delivered by our in-house health and wellbeing teams.

We hope you will understand and support these actions and any further subsequent measures we might need to put in place.

Yours sincerely
