National Dementia Care Awards Winner

Billy McKee, Activities Coordinator at Dereham care home Oak Manor, has received a national care award at a glittering ceremony.Billy was named Activities Coordinator of The Year for People with Dementia at the National Dementia Care Awards held on November 2nd at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Liverpool.Oak Manor provides specialist dementia nursing care for up to 61 people and is run by the family-owned Caring Homes Group. Mother and son team Helena and Paul Jeffery founded Caring Homes in 1994 and the Group has grown to become a leading independent care provider in the UK.Prior to joining Oak Manor, Billy worked as a professional musician and he incorporates his passion for music into his role at Oak Manor. Billy has organised regular music nights which are a huge hit with residents, their families, and staff alike.This year Billy has set plans in motion for a ‘Reminiscence Area’, which will be filled with retro furniture, outfits and sensory items. Activities that Billy has put in place include: “A Grand Day Out” where residents take a variety of trips out and about in the local area and “Movie Mondays”, a cinema club where residents can watch their favourite films. Billy has also managed to get hold of life size cardboard cut outs of movie stars from the golden age of cinema.Billy also runs “Pets As Therapy” sessions. Oak Manor has a fantastic menagerie of pets including three rabbits, two guinea pigs and two cats. Billy encourages residents’ relatives to bring their own animals along to the sessions too. This really encourages therapeutic interaction.Billy said:“I’m thrilled to win an award for a job I love so much. All the residents at Oak Manor are an absolute pleasure to work with and I really enjoy helping them to get the most out of life. I wouldn’t be able to do this without the support of a great team and manager.
