Mums and Tots Group at Mill House

At Mill House care home in Chipping Campden, we recently hosted a Mill House Mums and Tots group which was a great success.

Victoria Parry, Activites Coordinator commented:

“After the success of the Channel 4 documentary ‘Old people’s home for 4 year olds’, I discussed with our friend and volunteer Wendy about the possibility of doing something similar at Mill House.”

“We thought that the documentary respectfully showed the richness of interactions between the young children and the residents and how happy it made them.”

“We thought that it would give our residents an opportunity to spend time having spontaneous fun in an unstructured environment and where they would be completely free to be themselves.”

Wendy is connected with a local church and as part of that she was aware that there was a regular get together of the local mums to allow themselves and their children to interact with each other.

She very kindly organised for them to visit us on one of their scheduled meeting days and so the day arrived with much anticipation. Our residents were very excited and the room immediately lit up with their smiles as our little visitors entered the room.

The children straight away took to interacting with the residents by showing them the toys that they had brought with them.

We played various games that allowed our residents to use their coordination, including a game involving keeping a balloon off the floor for as long as possible using team work, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

We also did a sing-along-session and one of the mums played the piano for us. Our residents loved the children singing to them and copied the actions that the mums and children were doing to the music.

It was when we came to say goodbye that we really saw the bond that had been built between the children and the residents as the children ran to each resident in turn to say goodbye to them and a couple even gave our residents a hug.

Victoria said:

“It was extremely rewarding and lovely for me to see how well the session had worked, especially as one of the residents said to me “That was so lovely, I could cry I’m so happy.”

“It truly shows me what a positive and enriching experience it was for everyone involved and we all made some truly wonderful memories and we definitely intend to do this again in the future.”
