May Day at Heffle Court

Heffle Court Nursing Home in Heathfield celebrated May Day this week, and what a day it was!

The day was planned to be held in the garden but unfortunately there was torrential rain and we had to bring it inside, but it didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits, residents, relatives and the care team still had a great time!

We had visits from several owls who let the residents and their visitors stroke them. Animals and birds are great for residents living with dementia as they can reduce agitation and improve social interaction. Stroking animals can help you relax and is comforting to the residents, as the body release the hormone oxytocin, linked to anxiety relief. The residents loved interacting with the owls and discussed how they felt when they stroked them and their quirky movements. Focusing on taking care of an animal is a great way to give and receive love, ‘It’s a very positive thing to recognise the care and nurturing.

We also had a tombola, photo booth, a stilt walking May Queen and a singer! The residents loved our stilt walking queen, seen in the photo, everyone joined in dancing and singing along. The day was completed with a lovely buffet tea for all who visited. What a day it was!

At Heffle Court, we provide specialist dementia care in a purpose built environment. We continuously improve the lives of our residents through offering wide ranging services, activities and events, both in and outside of the home involving members of our local community as often as possible.
