It is a little know secret that Surrey County Council
provide a superb scheme called Library Direct to deliver books and volunteer
librarians to Nursing Homes; and we managed to tick the boxes and get it all up

silly and our main library has a new lease of life. Favourites seem to be autobiographies by the
famous and brave. Patricia had her nose
in The Crossing by James Cracknell and Ben Fogle; she managed to finish it
within 48 hours! Dogs with Jobs was a
popular choice and the David Jason autobiography “My Life” was snatched up quickly.
Our two lovely volunteers, Roz and Sally, will visit with a
trolley full of books the first Monday of every month. The residents get to request books of their
choice and they get a full six weeks before they have to renew. Many titles are in large print or available
in the spoken word format for those with Visual Impairment. And all of this has been provided free of
We cannot thank Surrey County Council enough for this service, it really has added to our “village within our home” feel and the residents are already looking forward to their next visit. Word has gone round like wild fire, and we are sure the numbers of attendees will grow on each visit – good job our library is so big.
And if you fancy a quiet uninterrupted read whilst all this is going on, please don’t panic, we have another smaller library placed in the Chapel Wing. Aren’t we lucky?
