Magna Care Centre Remembrance Day Tribute

Magna Care Centre in Wimborne, Dorset has paid tribute to Remembrance Day by creating a decorative memory tree which is displayed in the home for residents and relatives to write a message for someone they have loved and lost during the war.

Home Manager Teresa Freeman said “Remembrance Day is always a landmark occasion for our residents and we wanted to create an activity that allowed our residents to pay tribute to the occasion as actively as possible.

“Our war memorial tree has become a strong focal point in the home – and no more so during important commemoration events. It has encouraged our residents to spend time together, being creative and interacting and socialising with their peers.”

On Sunday 13th November, the home also held a Remembrance Day Service hosted by Rev John Bentall.Teas and coffees were served from 10am and later all guests and residents observed the Armistice Day two minute silence at 11am. The Vicar then read out all of the messages on the memory tree and visited residents in their rooms who were unable to join in the service.

Two of Magna Care Centre residents played active parts in the war as Claire Baggs and Cheryl Teuber (Activities Coordinators) explain, “Resident Barbara Barker was in the Queen Alexandra’s Military Nursing Reserve and went to Italy for the last year of the Second World War. She was based in a monastery which was used as a convalescent home where she was a nurse. Another resident here at Magna, Cyril Price, was a Corporal in the Royal Airforce and spent two years serving in India.”
