For the love of cake at Oaken Holt

For some of our residents at Oaken Holt care home in Farmoor, Oxfordshire, a homemade cake is just the ticket to complement a nice cup of afternoon tea and today was no exception. After all, tea tastes so much better with cake or so we’re told…

Our Activity Coordinators at Oaken Holt work closely with our residents to ensure that any planned sessions are built on existing interests, or curiosity around new experiences, so baking has become an important part of our varied activity schedule. Our regular class is a very popular event and our residents eagerly look forward to deciding on what they will make and their plans for decoration.

So setting up in our newly refurbished dining room, they rolled up their sleeves, donned their aprons and with wooden spoons at the ready, some of our residents were all ready to create their latest culinary cupcake masterpieces. When one of our chefs came into the room whilst the class was on, he was invited to join them whilst they whipped up a storm.

Regaling him with their experience of many years of baking, he was soon sitting down with them and helping them. Our residents were delighted that he was so interested in what they had to teach him and that he gave up his time for them. He commented that he enjoyed the education; discovering new tips and tricks, learning from their past experiences and last but not least, spending time with them.

The session also evoked many fond memories of time spent in their own homes cooking and baking for their families and friends. We know this activity is great not only for reminiscing but socialising, bringing our residents together and encouraging communication. Regardless of ability, everyone can take part from helping decide on flavours, stirring the mixture, to decorating, or simply enjoying participating by being with the group. Of course, the added bonus of the delicious aromas of freshly baked cake and then sampling the finished creations is a real treat. Afternoon tea anyone?

As part of Nutrition and Hydration Week, Oaken Holt will be running a series of events organsied by our Home Manager and Activities Coordinators to highlight the importance of nutrition and hydration for our residents and team. Watch this space for further details.

Set within 23 acres of beautiful gardens and parklands in the heart of rural Oxfordshire, Oaken Holt is a magnificent country estate offering residential and nursing care of the very highest standard.
