Learning the Art of Life at Coxhill Manor

Coxhill Manor care home in Chobham near Woking have been having some great fun with productive art sessions.

Joanna the homes’ activities coordinator has held some great interactive art workshops – from making Greetings Cards to creating an interpretation of Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ The residents have even done still life art out in the garden during the mini heatwave!

Joanna’s infectious enthusiasm has spread with many residents joining in and creating some wonderful artwork which is also proving to be great for their self-esteem.

Joanna says apart from thoroughly enjoying running the art afternoons, her favourite part has been witnessing the community the residents have found in each other, explaining; “When the art group come together, everyone is welcoming and supportive of each other regardless of ability. There are no boundaries. Seeing how proud the residents feel and how kind they are to each other makes these art afternoons my passion. They are certainly becoming a regular and popular fixture in this happy home.”

Resident Mary hasn’t done any art since leaving school and said she is “Absolutely loving this new-found hobby.” She has attended every single class.

Coxhill have also been welcomed Heather and Nick from the Lightbox Gallery, who bring their art workshops, ‘Art without Walls’ out into the community. Coxhill is proud to be one of their first destinations!

Art without Walls has proven to also be a great success with the resident artists and is now planned as a monthly event and it’s not just about the painting. Heather and Nick ensure there is a good discussion about the piece of art and the artist before they all get to work creating their own interpretations.

In celebration of ‘all things art’ Coxhill Manor held their first Art Café recently, complete with the best china and favourite cakes. Residents displayed their masterpieces for all to see.  Resident John gave a talk on what Art means to him and said “I never thought when I moved into Coxhill I would have the opportunity and support to continue my painting. The art classes have inspired me to paint again and it’s something I really look forward to.”

Some residents have asked to get their art framed to give to their families as gifts!
