Jefferey at Coppice Lea

The residents at Coppice lea in Merstham have been accompanied by a PAT dog named Jefferey for the last couple of months.

Pets As Therapy (PAT) is a national charity founded in 1983 by Lesley Scott-Ordish. They enhance health and wellbeing in the community through the visits of trusted volunteers with their behaviourally assessed animals, providing a visiting service in hospitals, hospices, nursing and care homes, special needs schools and a variety of other venues all across the UK.

Jeff is a Beddington Whippet cross lurcher who has made some great friends at Coppice Lea and is getting used to the environment, he also enjoys making room visits to see the residents who are unable to leave their rooms.

Jeff can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and increase social interaction as it can bring a resident out of their room with other residents and increase communication between them as they talk about their experience and reminisce about a pet they once had. PAT dogs can also increase physical activity and help residents learn.  Self esteem can be built on as our residents see the dog enjoy spending time with them and they have a chance to show their caring and gentle side as they stroke and look after Jeff, which is also good for mobility.

We look forward to Jeff’s future visits!

Coppice Lea provides specialist residential and nursing care in a purpose built environment for up to 51 elderly people.
