Inspectors praise L’Hermitage for kindness and care tailored to each person’s needs

L’Hermitage has been praised after the latest visit by the States of Jersey Inspectorate for providing friendly, kind and personalised care.

The care home received glowing feedback in each of the four sections – Accommodation, Care Needs and Support, Management and Leadership, Record Keeping – with no requirements due to be met following the visit which took place in December.

Residents praised the care team at L’Hermitage and the way in which they were treated, which always revolves around the individual’s needs. One said; “I think I have plenty of choice how I spend my time, sometimes I like to be in my room and other times in the lounge, it all depends how I am feeling.”

Part of the Caring Homes Group, L’Hermitage care home in St Peter, Jersey provides the highest standard of residential and nursing care for up to 66 elderly people in a stunning purpose-built care home.

Interactions observed between residents and staff on the day of the inspection were seen to be friendly, helpful and kind. Residents and visitors appeared to be comfortable and relaxed in their surroundings and each others’ company.

Staff spoken to by the inspectors had a good insight into their residents’ needs and the degree of intervention which was required. They spoke fondly about the residents and their families.

Staff champions are allocated to different topics such as infection control, manual handling, continence and the Gold Standards Framework in order to promote best practice and learning amongst the care team.

Staff also gave positive feedback about working at the home and feeling a valued member of the team. One said; “We have supervision sessions to develop our role and discuss how we are getting on, and talk about possible training we would like to do.”

Lunchtime was observed at the home and seen to be a relaxed and unhurried occurrence and appeared to be enjoyed by the residents.

Activities at L’Hermitage were seen to be of a high standard with a weekly programme of events as well as one to one sessions for those that preferred them. On the week of the inspection activities included a drive to St Peter’s Church to see the Christmas trees, art classes, musical memories, Irish dancing and schoolchildren coming in to visit and sing carols.

One resident commented; “There are always plenty of things going on here.” Another added; “I am very happy here, it’s a really nice, well run home.”

At the previous inspection a recommendation was made to alter the call bell system and make it less intrusive. The team were pleased to note that care staff now use a pager system which was seen to be far less disruptive to residents.

Colette Bonner, Home Manager, said: “At Caring Homes we want to ensure that our home is just that – a caring home. We are all extremely happy that the inspectors have given such positive feedback about L’Hermitage and the people who work here.”

Colette was praised in the report by both staff and relatives. One member of the care team said; “I feel our manager is very approachable and supportive. I really like working here.” Whilst relatives added; “No problems with anything here. Colette is a very good manager.” And “I feel very confident in the homes ability to look after my mum.”

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
To Whom it may concern,

RE: A message from the CEO and Clinical Director

At Caring Homes we are following the latest Government advice and stopping visitors to all our homes, except for essential visits by healthcare professionals who will be required to adhere to strict protocols.

We understand that this may be very difficult for families but we are clear in our duty to ensure we protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our Residents and Colleagues as our top priority.

We want you to know that you can contact your loved ones through calls, emails, video and social media and we will support our Residents to view any messages you send over. We are confident that the teams in our homes are doing all they can to ensure that life remains as comfortable and sociable as possible. There will be a full programme of activities delivered by our in-house health and wellbeing teams.

We hope you will understand and support these actions and any further subsequent measures we might need to put in place.

Yours sincerely
