Gramophone in the Garden at Coxhill Manor

Friday afternoons are often dedicated to musical activities here at Coxhill Manor in Woking, Surrey. Residents gather in the conservatory at 2pm to enjoy a fun filled musical afternoon, be it a sing-a-long, Name that Tune quiz, Jukebox Afternoon or even a Karaoke to name but a few.

On Friday 7th April it was a beautiful sunny day and it seemed a shame not to make the most of the lovely weather – so we held our music session in the garden!   One of our resident’s Roy kindly brought his gramophone and a selection of his old records to share with us.

And what a treat it was…. there’s certainly something incredibly special and mesmerising about the sound of the gramophone. Roy educated us as to the workings of the gramophone and introduced each song before it was played. It certainly prompted memories and conversation and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the music, the nostalgia, the company and of course the sunshine. We had our afternoon tea and cake in the garden too – so we all got our quota of fresh air and vitamin D too!

Roy himself said it was a pleasure to share his music collection and gramophone with us and was looking forward to when we do it again.

Well he didn’t have to wait too long… the following Friday was Good Friday and Roy offered to set up the gramophone in the Garden wing and play a few records appropriate to the day, for anyone who was interested.  He was only expecting a few people to turn up.  Well what a turn out; we had over twenty residents and family members attend.  Everyone particularly enjoyed the recordings of the Boys Choir from the school Roy attended as a child which made the muscial afternoon even more special.

Special thanks to Roy from all of us.

We finished the afternoon in the conservatory by playing hymns appropriate to Good Friday on the big screen in the conservatory.  From the simplicity and beauty of the gramophone to the wonders of the internet and you tube in one afternoon…

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
To Whom it may concern,

RE: A message from the CEO and Clinical Director

At Caring Homes we are following the latest Government advice and stopping visitors to all our homes, except for essential visits by healthcare professionals who will be required to adhere to strict protocols.

We understand that this may be very difficult for families but we are clear in our duty to ensure we protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our Residents and Colleagues as our top priority.

We want you to know that you can contact your loved ones through calls, emails, video and social media and we will support our Residents to view any messages you send over. We are confident that the teams in our homes are doing all they can to ensure that life remains as comfortable and sociable as possible. There will be a full programme of activities delivered by our in-house health and wellbeing teams.

We hope you will understand and support these actions and any further subsequent measures we might need to put in place.

Yours sincerely
