Gingerbread House Fun at Coxhill Manor

Gingerbread house making is becoming somewhat of a Christmas tradition here for our team and residents at Coxhill Manor care home in Woking, Surrey.

Activity coordinator Julia organised two sessions; the first was pre-Christmas with our residents in the conservatory.  The gingerbread houses were prebaked by Julia so the session focused on assembling and decorating the houses.  Everyone got really into the activity and imaginations ran wild.

One of our residents Karen even made little animals to go in her gingerbread house garden!  Each house was very different and they were left out on display for all to admire.

Not all residents choose to participate and there is never any pressure to do so, as some people get a lot out of inactive participation and enjoy just watching and interacting socially, which itself nurtures a sense of belonging.

The second session of gingerbread house making was post Christmas, and was for the children who visit their loved ones at Coxhill Manor. This gets very popular and places are obviously limited so booking a place has become essential!

The children have lots of fun making the houses, while our residents really do enjoy watching the children in action and enjoying their company and interaction.  Activity coordinator Jo brought her own children in and Lillian was smitten with 4 month old Alfie. She spent time nursing him and reminiscing with fellow residents about her own son when he was a baby. ‘My beautiful boy’ she fondly called him… and still does to this day. In fact we often play the song ‘My Beautiful Boy’ by John Lennon especially for Lillian when we have a ‘ jukebox hour’ on the big screen here at Coxhill Manor.

It’s great to provide the opportunity for the generations to come together and show the youngsters that life at Coxhill Manor can be fun!   Safe to say the children were made very welcome and had a fun and positive experience.  The children really do light up the faces of residents and trigger happy memories and conversation.  It has inspired us to look at more ways of developing interaction with the younger generation… Watch this space.

Good old fashioned family fun had by all. Everyone got something very different out of the afternoon and the activity and of course the gingerbread houses were beautifully decorated too!
